![]() It was a fun game, and had I been a bit quicker in taking Kyoto after RD, I could have won while keeping my trusty (and fearsome) Urukami allies. By the end, they were like demi-gods, getting 90%+ odds on mission success! My metsuke managed to bribe one entire Shimazu army to switch sides while my ninja sabotaged their main death stack army of enhanced shimazu-katana samurai for 4 full seasons while I gutted, overran and vassalized their clan homeland using the traitors! Later, after assassinating most of their family members, I trapped their katana-army in a siege using my reinforced turncoat samurai, and wiped them out for good. I went full-out metzuke & ninja secret war, burning enemy crops and executing any enemy agent that showed up anywhere near my lands. At some point my dishonorable daimyo dies of natural causes, reinstating our clan's reputation for his honorable son. Yamana eventually got smashed, but Urukami amazingly solo-conquered the Ikko Ikki back to 2 provinces! This gave me the breathing room I needed to deal with the rising Ouchi and Shimazu powers on Kyushu. Luckily I managed to stonewall long enough to pay off the Urukami and Yamana to make peace and start trading, creating a buffer against the Ikko Ikki, who by that point were terrifyingly huge having overrun the entire central Japan. The Kikkawa remained solid albeit weak allies who eventually got wiped out by the Urukami. It took me several restarts to finally form a defensible territory strong enough to hold out vs 3 or 4 enemies at once - I had to betray the Shoni to grab their horses for trade plus sack some towns to raise cash, leaving a dishonorable stain on my daimyo. I was constantly dealing with the threat of a 2- or even 3-front war while only having enough cash to field 1 proper army. If you attack along a 1-front war, you'll probably end up w/ a long strung-out indefensible collection of territories, only to get simultaneously slammed by Ouchi/Shoni from one side and Yamama/Okko Ikki on the other. Plus they sit square along the main invasion route between Kyushu and Honshu, so holding the straight there is a constant necessity. Everyone wants a piece of Mori, and they get a crap ship bonus and have nothing to trade at start. When I played the campaign, Imagawa remained steadfast allies (and overlords) protecting the eastern borders while I overran central Japan, right up until RD.īut in the end I think it might be Mori. But they actually start w/ horses and they get a diplo bonus, so they can find trade partners fairly easily, and then arrange some marriages to get friendly relations. These days 24 hours of audio playback isn't earth shattering either, but it's certainly commendable, and while it doesn't appear SanDisk is going to change to face of the DAP market with this unit, we're sure they've hit the sweet spot for some. Audio quality doesn't quite match the Sony A810 or Samsung P2, and the codec support is fairly limited, but obviously Rhapsody integration is the real draw here. He liked the fact that he could run the Rockbox alternative. Unfortunately, the size only leaves room for a 1.9-inch screen, which CNET calls "dingy," and SanDisk's proprietary syncing port on the player isn't winning it any fans. Sam picked up a Sansa Clip audio player to listen to some tunes while working on projects. Starting at $80 for 2GB and ramping up to $130 for 8GB, the player is certainly a good deal, and its diminutive form factor - a compromise between the Clip and the View - measures a mere 0.3-inches thick, while still managing a quality feel and a microSD slot. PC Magazine and CNET put the player through its paces and came out with a few nice things to say about it. If you don't want to run Rockbox then get the Zip.Those of you hoping to have your mind blown can go ahead and leave quietly out the back, but for anyone else hoping for a dirt-cheap and fairly lovable DAP, the Sansa Fuze from SanDisk might just fit the bill. I would choose either the Zip or the Fuze+ according to the control interface you prefer. The Fuze+ advantages are the very legible bigger screen, the extra power, the extra battery life and the absence of any system noise.Īll the players' output levels are much the same and they all have low impedance output so can be used with all kinds of earphones and headphones. The Clips work nicely enough out of the box whereas the Fuze+ really does need Rockbox firmware installed. I would say the advantages of the Clips over the Fuze+ are the convenience of a very tiny player with a clip on the back and the ease of use of normal hardware buttons. I haven't owned my Fuze+ long enough to compare durability with the older players but touchpad controls might last better than any small buttons. I haven't seen any report of this with the Fuze+ and in my experience it sounds extremely good even with extremely good headphones such as Sennheiser Momentums as well as with cheaper IEMs and headphones. With very sensitive IEMs some people hear annoying system noises with the Clips and old Fuze. I found the radio on the Fuze+ a little better than on the Clip+ as it has RDS and is a bit less noisy with weak signals. It has longer battery life too (now up to about 40 hours in Rockbox). It can also play some very large files that sometimes cause problems for the Clips and old Fuze. It has a lot more processing power and more RAM than the Clip players so it's much quicker at refreshing database and so on. With Rockbox you actually get to enjoy the great sound and nice screen. I have a Fuze+ 8GB and wrote a review of it in this board's Head Gear section and concluded that I would not buy the player unless intending to run Rockbox. ![]() The touchpad works nicely enough with Rockbox but is truly awful in Sansa's firmware. It sounds at least as good but many people absolutely hate the touchpad control. The Fuze+ has entirely different hardware than the Clip+ or Zip. Aside from that the players are much the same in use and can both run Rockbox firmware if you prefer it to Sansa's. The main differences in Sansa's firmware are that the Clip Zip can play AAC files and that it doesn't have the well known pitch error of some of the older Sansas such as Clip, Clip+ and original Fuze. The Clip+ and Zip have almost identical hardware, the main difference being that the Zip has a colour screen. Please help me move the thread if I'm wrong. Anyways I'm looking for a DAP and am a little confused about the 3 in the title. I've been lurking around but only recently created an account. Hello~ I'm new here at head-fi! Well, not exacty. Sure, it’s just an algorithm building something based on past listens, but it seems more finely tuned than rivals, offering suggestions that are less obvious but somehow more apposite. The personalised Discover Weekly playlist seems to have a supernatural sense of your tastes. Plus the service’s recommendations and music discovery capabilities are second to none. There’s an extensive library of around 70 million songs. The desktop app, mobile apps and web player are slickly designed and a breeze to use. It’s easy to see why Spotify is so popular. It’s £9.99 a month for a single subscription, £5.99 for students, £13.99 for a Duo (two-account) subscription and £16.99 for a six-account Family plan. The Premium version nixes the ads, increases streaming quality to 320kbps, enables downloads for offline playback and gives you real control over what you’re listening to. Price-wise, it offers an ad-supported free tier (with some of the most annoying commercials you’ll ever hear), which restricts track skipping and doesn’t allow for offline listening. The original all-you-can-eat music streaming service, Spotify is still the go-to option for millions of listeners despite its recent podcast-related woes. Still, with its high audio quality, big library and reasonable pricing, Music Unlimited is a very credible alternative, particularly if you’re already a Prime member. There’s little sense of the algorithm-derived magic you get with Spotify suggestions, and not much in the way of editorial curation. ![]() However you access it, the player feels utilitarian and generic: you can browse suggested albums and playlists, make your own playlists and occasionally see a song’s lyrics or background info via X-Ray, but there’s not much personality.įor finding new tunes, the “My Discovery Mix” is updated in your library every Monday (an idea clearly borrowed from Spotify), but the suggestions feel both uninspired and uninspiring. You can listen to Amazon Music Unlimited through a web player, iOS and Android mobile apps or the desktop app, as well as requesting tracks, albums and artists from Alexa through Echo speakers. If you only ever plan to listen through the same Echo or Fire TV, there’s also a single-device subscription that’ll set you back just £3.99 a month. There’s also a six-account Family plan available for £14.99 a month, plus a student plan for £4.99 a month. Music Unlimited is priced at £7.99 a month for Prime members (£9.99 for non-members), making it marginally cheaper than Spotify’s offering. It has a library of over 70 million tracks and recently made higher bitrate tracks (which it calls “HD” and “Ultra HD”) available to all subscribers at no extra cost. Not to be confused with Prime Music (which is included with Prime Membership),v Amazon Music Unlimited ( sign up in the US or in the UK) is the company’s current Spotify rival. ![]() For those that make the switch, Apple has built a very solid house for them to play in – especially if you have an existing iTunes library to integrate.Īmazon Music Unlimited (from £3.99 per month)Īmazon has offered a digital music service of some kind since 2007, but it still feels like a newcomer next to Spotify. If Spotify HiFi does end up costing more, we suspect many will flock to Apple Music without feeling too sad about it. Spatial audio has more obvious room for different compositional elements, but it doesn’t sound significantly different from the tracks mixed in Sony’s Atmos rival, 360 Reality Audio, which is available on Deezer and Tidal – so it’s not strictly unique to Apple Music. To have lossless and Dolby Atmos tracks included at no extra cost makes Apple Music cheaper than Deezer, Tidal and possibly the forthcoming Spotify HiFi. These don’t quite hit the heights of Spotify’s discovery algorithm, but that’s really the only way in which Spotify feels like the superior service. Like its rivals, Apple Music offers a wide selection of curated playlists based on a particular mood, genre or other unifying theme, as well as algorithm-generated playlists designed specifically for the user. ![]() ![]() A new Lockdown Mode designed for high-ranking government ministers and CEOs, restricting activity allowed on the device to avoid potential hacksįor more on iOS 16, take a look at the iOS 16 page on the Apple website.Android-esque Privacy Access History will tell you which apps have been using your camera, microphone and location recently. No longer a shortcut, but its own app in the app bar. The transitions are well thought through and are regularly incredibly visually effective, catching new racers off-guard for a second as they try to work out what just happened. ![]() Mario Kart 8 introduced subtle but ridiculously effective mid-race antigravity transformations, meaning that parts of the track would have you driving up walls and on ceilings. New items like the foe chomping Piranha Plant, the Boomerang Flower and the Blue Shell combatting Super Horn helped to mix up the gameplay too. Multibeam sonar sensors - sometimes called multibeam acoustic sensors or echo-sounders - are a type of sound transmitting and receiving system. ![]() These systems work by transmitting a sound pulse, called a ping, through a transmitter at a specific frequency, and then receiving that same pulse through a receiver placed very close to the transmitter. The transmitter and receiver are called transducers because they convert energy into another form ( Figure 1). The transmitter converts an electrical signal into an acoustical pulse and the receiver converts an acoustical pulse into an electrical signal. A computer determines how long it takes to receive the returning pulse which, when the transducers are pointed toward the seafloor, translates to depth. The more time it takes for the pulse to return, the farther away the object is. Assigning a color range or grey scale for depth can create a top-side view of the seafloor. ![]() Multibeam sonar has several transducers that allow a large swath of area to be surveyed at once making surveying much faster and more accurate ( figure 3). The swath width is determined by the depth of the seafloor being surveyed. The ping is emitted in a fan shape outward from the transmitter. The farther away the object the more area there is for the sound to echo off. The sonar pings several times per second which, with the speed of the boat, determines the horizontal resolution of the images created. ![]() If the boat is moving very fast and the rate that the sonar unit is pinging is slow, then the number of times sound is bounced off the seafloor in the area covered is fewer than if the boat was moving slowly while the unit was set to a high ping rate.
